How Shopify fees work

Shopify charges a monthly plan fee plus payment processing on each order:

Pricing tip

On your own store, ads are usually the biggest cost. Enter what you spend in ads divided by the orders it brings, and price so the margin still holds.

Worked example

On a sale where you receive $40.00, Shopify fees come to $7.95 (19.9% of the sale). After $11.50 in product, shipping and packaging costs, you keep $20.55, a 51% margin. These are the calculator's starting numbers, so you can change any of them above.

Common questions

Does Shopify take a percentage of sales?

With Shopify Payments there is no extra Shopify percentage, only card processing. With another processor, Shopify adds 0.6% to 2% depending on your plan.

Which Shopify plan is cheapest per order?

Basic is cheapest for most new stores. Grow starts to pay off when the lower card rate saves more than the higher plan price, usually above about $30,000 a year in sales.

Why include ad spend?

Your own store has no built-in marketplace traffic, so most sales come from ads. Leaving them out makes profit look far higher than it is.
